Start with a written scope. Ask the provider to state what it believes the pest problem is, what work is proposed, how many visits are included, whether proofing or follow-up is included, and what would cost extra.
Why pest quotes can be hard to compare
A quote for one visit may not be equivalent to a plan that includes inspection, multiple treatments and follow-up checks. Access also matters: a wasp nest in a reachable shed may involve different work from activity in a roof void or wall cavity. For rodents, treatment and preventing re-entry are separate questions.
When contacting a provider, describe the signs you have seen, where they are, when you first noticed them, the property type and any access restrictions. Avoid assuming you know the species from a single clue. Where safe, a clear photograph can help with an initial conversation, but the provider may still need to inspect.
A six-point quote checklist
Inspection and diagnosis
Ask what is included in the assessment and whether the provider will check likely entry points or contributing conditions as well as visible activity.
Number of visits
Get the number of visits in writing. Ask what triggers a return visit, how much an extra visit costs, and what happens if signs continue.
Full price and VAT
Ask whether the quote includes VAT, call-out, materials, treatment, preparation, repeat visits and access equipment. Check whether it is fixed or an estimate.
Proofing and prevention
For rodents, ask whether entry points will be identified and whether proofing is included or separately priced. For other pests, ask what may reduce recurrence.
Safety and aftercare
Ask what you must do before and after treatment, including instructions for children, pets, food-preparation areas and re-entry to treated areas.
Credentials and insurance
Ask which qualifications apply to the technician doing the work and what insurance is held. Check trade-body membership in the association’s own directory rather than relying only on a logo.
Use the council service as a local benchmark
Cardiff Council publishes residential prices and visit counts for several treatments. At the time of this review, its page lists £75 for rats, mice or squirrels (three visits), £75 for wasps (one visit), and £95/£120 for flea treatments depending on the area treated; the listed prices include VAT. It lists a minimum of three visits for commercial properties and £85 for the first hour of commercial rodent treatment, followed by £42.50 per additional half-hour.
The same council page says residential bedbug and cockroach treatments are currently unavailable, although its price table still contains prices for them. Check the live council page before relying on a price or service. Council work and private quotes may cover different scopes, so compare visits and included work as well as the headline amount.

Why the date on a price matters
Published information can become stale. One Cardiff-area provider’s local pricing page labels its own prices as July 2013 and asks customers to confirm whether they remain valid. That may provide context, but it is not a dependable current quote. The directory flags the page instead of presenting the figures as current rates.
For each provider, ask for a quote that matches your location and situation. Keep the date, description of work and quote so you can compare alternatives fairly.

Where to check provider credentials
Several businesses say on their websites that they belong to professional bodies or hold pest-management qualifications. These are provider-published statements, not independent checks performed by Cardiff Pest Guide. Ask which technician will attend and which qualification or membership applies to your job.
