Stay back from an active nest. Cardiff Council notes that wasps can sting when disturbed. If you see repeated flight to one opening, keep people and pets away and get advice before trying to interfere with it.

How to recognise a wasp nest

Cardiff Council says nests are often found in roof spaces, wall cavities, sheds, trees and under eaves. They are made from chewed wood pulp, which gives them a papery appearance.

The clearest sign of an active nest is repeated wasp movement in and out of the same entrance, especially during the day. An old nest with no activity is different: Cardiff Council says nests last one season and are not reused the following year.

01Watch from a distance

Note whether wasps repeatedly use one gap in brickwork, an eave, a shed or a tree.

02Describe the location

Tell a provider if it appears to be in a roof space, wall cavity or another hard-to-reach place.

03Check for confusion

Bees and wasps can be mistaken for each other. If you are unsure, ask for identification first.

Wasps or bees? Check before acting

Cardiff Council describes wasps as smooth-bodied with a narrower waist; bees tend to look rounder and fuzzier. Colour alone is not a reliable reason to treat an insect as a wasp.

Cardiff Council does not provide a pest-control treatment for bees and advises people not to use insecticides or block an active bee nest. It suggests contacting a beekeeper or a suitable specialist where a nest needs attention. If you are unsure what you have found, start with the council’s bee guidance or request an identification before booking treatment.

When are wasps most active?

Cardiff Council describes a seasonal cycle: new nests begin in spring, colonies grow through summer, and wasps can become more noticeable around food and sugary drinks in autumn. Its guidance says old nests are not reused, so the presence of an old paper nest by itself does not show that a current colony is active.

Keep food and sweet drinks covered outdoors, close bin lids and dispose of food waste properly. The council also recommends checking sheltered areas for early nest-building. Avoid sealing a gap if you can see wasps actively using it; ask a professional to assess the site first.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Does the provider agree that the insect is a wasp, rather than a bee or another species?
  • Does the quoted price include the visit and any follow-up if activity continues?
  • Will the technician need access to a loft, roof, wall cavity or garden structure?
  • What should household members do while the work is being carried out, and what aftercare is recommended?
